Build a Self-Managing Team

A key to good leadership is to know how to involve everyone in the success you want to achieve.
Everyone wants to play on a winning team, but in business most people don’t understand the rules of the game, how the score is kept or even how their jobs contribute to success. Involvement is the key to helping your team realize that same sense of excitement and accomplishment that comes from being on a winning sports team.
When you involve your people in the decision making process, you gain three advantages. First, you educate your people about the goals that are to be achieved and clearly define how success is to be measured.
Secondly, the plan of action you jointly develop to reach these goals is much more likely to be enthusiastically embraced by your team than if you simply dictate the specific actions they are expected to take.
Finally – and this it the real payoff – since your team understands where you are going, how you are going to get there and the role each of them plays in getting you there, they now have the ability to make decisions independently. That’s a self-managing team.
This means your team can quickly adjust to changing situations. It means your job is easier. It means results come more quickly and finally it means your people have an opportunity to get real satisfaction from their work.
The next time you find yourself telling your people what you want them to do, think again. Instead, talk with them about what goals need to be accomplished and why, solicit their thoughts on how to go about accomplishing the goals. Then turn them loose and watch
